What Is Fluorspar?

Fluorspar, also called fluorite, is a mineral made of calcium fluoride (CaF₂). It occurs in many colours, from purple and green to grey and colourless, and it is the world’s main source of fluorine. Most people have never heard of it, yet it is hidden inside everyday products, from the steel in buildings to the batteries in electric vehicles.

Where Is Fluorspar Used?

Chemicals and refrigerants. Fluorspar is processed into hydrofluoric acid (HF), the starting point for fluorochemicals, refrigerants and many speciality materials.

Steel and metals. Fluorspar is used as a flux in steelmaking. It lowers the melting point of slag and helps remove impurities. It is also used to produce aluminium fluoride for aluminium smelting.

Batteries and electronics. Fluorine chemistry is used in lithium-ion batteries and semiconductor manufacturing, which are both growing sectors.

Ceramics and glass. Fluorspar improves melting and the finish of glass, enamel and ceramics.

Why Is Fluorspar a Critical Mineral?

Several major economies classify fluorspar as a critical mineral. Modern industry depends on it, and supply is concentrated in a limited number of producing countries. That is why buyers worldwide are looking for new, reliable suppliers.

Fluorspar from Pakistan

Pakistan’s main fluorite-producing region is the Loralai Fluorite Belt in Balochistan. DKB, has operated there since 2010, mining and exporting fluorspar through Karachi Port.
